The Family dentist in Winnipeg and their team have lots to offer you when it comes to aesthetics and durability. Composite fillings make a great combination that helps restore your decayed teeth.

A composite filling is a tooth-colored dental restoration that is a mixture of plastic (acrylic) resin reinforced with a powdered glass filler. These aesthetic fillings help restore your tooth structure lost due to caries, cracks, or fractures. They are best suited for use in anterior (front) teeth and other visible areas of the mouth since they easily blend with your natural teeth. However, they can be used for posterior teeth (premolars and molars) as well.

    Uses of Composite fillings

Composite fillings are used to treat a variety of dental problems, like:

    • Chipped or cracked teeth
    • Diastema (space in between your teeth)
    • Dental decay in the visible areas of your mouth
    • Teeth that are worn out due to attrition or bruxism

    Benefits of composite fillings

Composite fillings are gaining traction in the field of cosmetic dentistry due to the following advantages:

    • Are tooth-colored and blend with the natural teeth easily
    • Provide good durability
    • Offer superior aesthetics
    • Offer excellent fracture resistance
    • Facilitates quick procedure
    • Involve a painless procedure
    • Can fix minor flaws to major damage
    • Are super affordable
    • Require low maintenance

    The procedure involved

Getting a composite filling is simple, easy, and quick. It usually involves the following steps if performed by an experienced dentist.

    • Your dentist will first select an appropriate shade that matches your natural teeth.
    • The tooth will be isolated using a rubber dam that helps in moisture control. Excess moisture can interfere with the bonding of the composite material.
    • The tooth is then air-dried and excavated to remove the decayed tissues.
    • The dentist will etch and bond the tooth using bonding agents through a process called acid etching. This helps create micropores in your enamel surface to lock in the composite material, ensuring effective bonding.
    • The composite material will be layered carefully, and after each layer, the cement will be hardened through an LED light.
    • The restored tooth will be shaped and polished.
    • Your dentist will check your bite for any high points to make sure you are comfortable with the restoration.

    Closure

Composite fillings are aesthetic restorations that are increasingly popular. They can restore decayed or damaged teeth with minimal preparation, ensuring enhanced durability and long-lasting results. Good oral hygiene practices and regular dental visits can help prolong their lifespan.
