How To Prepare for Your First Camping Trip of the Year

You spend much of winter looking forward to your first camping trip of the season. With a few steps of preparation, that first trip can be an awesome adventure. If you are trying a new campsite, you will need to add a few additional steps so that you do not have any unpleasant disappointments.

o   Inventory your Equipment

At the end of last season, you thought you replaced your tent. Now you are not so sure. It is worth the time and energy to take all your gear out of storage. Or maybe you loaned your sleeping bags to friends, and they have not been returned.

Develop a list of all the gear you have. Include your tent, its stakes, and poles. Any awnings you attach. Then write down the chairs and tables that you bring. List all the components of your sleeping equipment. Tools and cooking essentials including any grills that you bring should be noted. First aid supplies should be counted. Portable lighting, batteries, and other lights are important to add to the list.

o   Repair, Replace, or Test your Gear

Take your list and then note the items that need repair, which can include a thorough cleaning. Remember you might need to take sleeping bags to a laundromat to be washed. Check through what needs to be replaced because it is worn or missing. Open your tent to inspect that it is not damaged in any way. Assess the condition of your lanterns and replace any batteries.

o   Trying a New Campsite

For your first venture back into the woods, trying a new place is an exciting idea. Be certain to review the campsite’s website for what is available. Get your reservation early, so you can select the dates you want. Check what they offer for water, showers, and power.

Keep your list in a place you will remember its location and use it each year and for each trip. Check your equipment with sufficient time to clean and replace any equipment before your first camping trip.
