The right CV – how to write one?

Without a well-written CV, it is difficult to expect success in the job search. Fortunately, it is not as difficult as it sounds to put together a CV that will appeal to employers. We offer resume examples of what to keep in mind and what mistakes to avoid.

Length of CV and file format

A CV for someone just starting out in his career should fit on one A4 page. If you have at least a few years’ work experience, you may want to add another page. Note that subsequent pages should always be printed on separate sheets of paper.

You can add colourful graphics to stand out from the crowd of other candidates, but it is worth observing moderation. Bright graphics should not detract from the content. Therefore, it is better to simply highlight the most important information in the CV in bold.

Photo

It is not a good idea to post a photograph in incomplete attire, such as in a bikini or with a can of beer in your hand. It also does not have to be a passport photo. You may include an original photograph if it is work-related or content-neutral.

Division of the CV model

A CV should have several sections: personal details, education, work experience, training and courses, skills and interests. The headings of each section should be bold, printed in larger type and sometimes highlighted with graphics. The information in each section should be presented as dotted lines.

Consent to processing of personal data

You should always include your consent to the processing of your personal data in the footer of your CV and cover letter. Here is a sample formula:

  • I consent to the processing of my personal data for the purposes necessary for the recruitment process (in accordance with the law of … (date, month, year) on the protection of personal data).

An employer may require a slightly different clause, but then he/she will state this in the advertisement.

Job title and reference number

You should write the job title and reference number at the top of each CV – e.g. “Recruitment for salesperson position (reference: 01/10)”. The same information should be stated in the subject and body of the letter you send to the prospective employer.
