Epithalon, first developed in the 1980s in Russia, is also known by the names of Epithalamin, Epitalon, or Epithalone. This synthetic peptide has the ability to activate an enzyme called telomerase. In turn, this enzyme promotes the release of melatonin hormone. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone in human body which is produced I reaction to darkness. That is why this is also called the ‘sleep hormone’.

Released from the pineal gland in night, this hormone helps us to sleep better and to orient circadian rhythm. Research has shown that Epithalon can slow down the process of aging in rats and mice as it improves immunity along with life span. Not only anti-aging effect, Epithalone is helpful with DNA regulation, infectious diseases and certain classes of cancer.

    DNA activation

This hormone is being widely researched to explore its potentials and mechanisms that lead to longevity. One of the ways through which Epithalon works is by regulating certain gene expression. Cell culture studies indicated that it has the capability to interact with certain genes’ promoter region. It enhances the expression of MMP2, CD5, IL – 2, and Tram1.

Maintaining the extracellular matrix in the connective tissues, skin and tendons is a critical body function in which MMP2 plays an important role. On the other hand, IL – 2 and CD5 contributes towards the immune system. That is why this peptide has the ability to boost immunity and lead to a better healing process from injury. This peptide also triggered the synthesis of interferon-gamma from the lymphocytes in rats. This important signaling molecule helps the body by preparing it to fight infections through natural killer-cell activation, macrophage and T lymphocytes. Telomerase enzyme and anti-aging effects

Epithalon treatment on rats and fruit flies decreased the mortality rate by 52 %. Mice suffering from cancer and cardiac diseases got their longevity increased by 27 %. Epithalone eliminates free radicals to prevent damage to healthy tissues. Telomerase, the enzyme activated by Epithalon preserves the telomeres or the ends of the chromosomes. Preserving the telomeres is important for maintaining DNA’s integrity. Preserving telomeres helps to reduce the errors in DNA strands. Epithalone helps in warding off aging, cancer and cellular dysfunction caused by errors in DNA.

    Tumor growth

Metastasis of cancerous cells to distant tissues is something that can be reduced with Epitalon. When administered on rats on a daily basis, it reduced the metastasis as well as the growth of the tumor. Because of this, this peptide is under research for the treatment of types of leukemia, testicular cancer and breast cancer. PER1 protein that is produced in the hypothalamus gets activated by this peptide. PER1 is capable of influencing the growth of cancer once disease gets established in the body. Controlling PER1 can help to control the growth of cancerous tumor. It sensitizes the cancerous cells to radiation. The size of the growth decreases which reduces the dose of radiation. Along with that the chances of tumors due to extensive radiation therapy gets minimized as well.
